Basketball, therapy & Adekunle Gold: the things that see Joe Daymond thrive

"I dance all the time. Not good," says comedian Joe Daymond. Photo / Supplied

Joe Daymond is cool. And funny. And beloved. The comedian, TikTok star, writer, producer and entrepreneur is nominated for the NZ TV Awards Personality of the Year Award alongside iconic Kiwis such as Dr Warner and Dame Susan Devoy; the winner will be announced on December 5.

The ultimate slashie, Daymond’s entrepreneurial skills have seen him work across many facets of the entertainment and social media industries before setting up his own company, West Park, to house them all. Daymond describes West Park as a “youth-led, indigenous focused media company”.

Whatever it is, it’s a bonafide success at creating content that reaches audiences where they are. Case in point, the series Bouncers he created for Comedy Central, a vehicle that showcased his writing, acting, directing and producing chops, as well as providing merch opportunities like limited edition tees that would drop as the shows aired and sell out soon thereafter.

Eager to get inside this creative brain, we asked Joe for insight into the last time he cried, laughed and more.

When was the last time you cried?

Last time I cried was telling my partner that I love her. Has taken a lot of years of therapy for me to figure out how to express myself in that way. Still struggle to, but something so simple for a lot of people was always difficult for me so, really proud of myself for growing in that way.

When was the last time you danced, and what were you dancing to?

I dance all the time. Not good. But if we’re talking about participating in the activity, I do that. Was dancing in the car to Something Different by Adekunle Gold, who is one of my favourite singers.

@joedaymond In celebration of Matariki this week, thought I’d provide a Joey D history lesson (Excuse the sweat patch) 😂 what city you in fam, putting the tour together, it’s gonna be a big one 👀 #nz #maori #maoritiktok #polytiktok🇦🇸🇼🇸 #standupcomedy ♬ original sound - Joe Daymond

What was the last thing you bought and loved?

My basketball. I love basketball, play twice a week. And just love having my own ball that I can rock down to any court and just throw shots up at.

When was the last time you got really angry and what was it about?

I get angry about not knowing where my life is going. It’s usually only for a mere moment and the more accurate word is probably frustration, but it passes as soon as it comes and it's always internal.

What’s the last piece of clothing you bought?

I bought four white tees and a pair of white socks from AS Colour as part of their 5 items for $125 deal.

What was the last really delicious thing you ate?

My favourite place in Auckland is Kingmade Noodles on Fort St. I always get the A2, Braised Beef Noodles with T6 Thick Noodles. If you feel like having your mind blown, go check that.

The last song you listened to on Spotify?

Tio Baby by Adekunle Gold.

The last book you finished?

Creativity Inc by Ed Catmull about the creation of Pixar. If you know me, I’ve been obsessed with Pixar since I was a kid. I watch the documentary about them on Disney Plus religiously.

The last TV show you watched?

Just finished Mare of Easttown starring Kate Winslet. Such a good show –  I love a good murder mystery and would love to create something like that one day.

The last DM/text you sent? Who was it to?

Been booking a standup tour, so been doing the new generation thing and texting venues instead of emailing. Always a bit more personal, way faster, and I don’t have to say ‘kind regards’ at the end of every message hahaha.

The last time you laughed so much your tummy hurt?

Talking to my brother-in-law Derek always gets me cracking up like this.

What’s the last drug you took?

I’m on Dexamphetamine for my ADHD.

When’s the last time you were home?

Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt is my home. Went back only a few weeks ago to visit all my family and hang out with everyone.
