Wear a mask: “It's a sign you care about your community.”

This story was originally published on August 12 2020, and has been updated with new masks.

You know what’s chic? Wearing a face mask.

We’re still in a global pandemic, and with the knowledge that community transmission has returned to Aotearoa, now is the time to re-embrace mask wearing (we have no time for anti-mask conspiracy theories).

At the VMAs last year, Lady Gaga wore a wardrobe of masks on-stage explaining that "it's a sign of respect". That echoes a past comment from PM Jacinda Ardern who eloquently expressed a key reason to wear one: "It's a sign you care about your community."

Caring? Respect? Also chic!

Several local designers have pivoted to mask making, and while many have very quickly sold out, some have plans to make more and are taking pre-orders. Here, a few good options if you have the means to invest in a designer option.

You can also DIY your own for free, with various online guides - Aych McArdle has also compiled a handy guide of patterns and instructions for making your own or making masks for community groups.
