What’s trending in colour?

Content coloured by Resene

Colour choice, especially within a home, is very personal. And fashion is no different. Being abreast of the trends is great for getting inspired, but surrounding yourself with hues that make you feel good is really where it’s at.

While we continue to straddle working between the office and the dining room table, many of us have discovered the importance of creating a more comfortable and invigorating WFH environment, and colour naturally plays a big role in this.

If you’re looking to expand your colour wheel to feel more creative, at ease or inspired this season, these are the tones that are trending as we head deeper into 2022.

Green

There will likely never be a time when green isn’t in style, but this season, emerald, forest, matcha and sage are the tones particularly worthy of your attention. Bringing shades from the outside world in, helps to foster a sense of calm and closeness with nature, which is particularly important when we’re stuck inside or based in inner-city areas with less greenery on the doorstep.

Sage is a lovely tone for introducing colour into your home as it’s incredibly versatile. Hues like Resene ‘Peace’ look fantastic in kitchens and bathrooms paired with gold, silver, or black hardware and give life to earthy tones such as tan, cream and woods stained in dark Resene Colorwood colours.

Pot plants are an easy way to instantly add a touch of green to your home. Forget about your past indoor plant failings and dabble in plant parenting again with hard-to-kill species such as Monstera Deliciosa, Ficus Elastica (rubber plant) and Sansevieria (Mother in Law’s Tongue).  Refresh plant pots in Mother Nature inspired colours with Resene test pots to layer in extra colour variation.

If you’re stuck in an all-black-everything zone style wise, emerald green makes for an effortless transition into something a bit softer, especially for special events.

Blue

Moody blues are making a comeback for the cooler months, but that’s not to say they won’t transition well into summer. When it comes to fashion, navy blue is the perfect hue to choose if the dress code is ambiguous. Contrast with dark brown and pops of bright colour such as yellow, or complement with lighter shades of blue such as teal, blue/grey or even sage green if you want to be really on trend.

In the home, dark and midnight blues, such as Resene ‘Indian Ink’ and Resene ‘Twilight Zone’, work well in a dining area especially if you have a more intimate space. Bring brightness to the room with soft lighting such as a floor lamp or candles for winter dinners in the dark, and let the evening glow of the sun light the space during those longer summer evenings. The blue will help keep the cosy feeling all year round, and by accenting it with shades of terracotta and clay (which are also trending for 2022) you’ll add a modern yet timeless styling touch.

Purple

For the first time ever, Pantone’s Colour of the Year was a brand-new shade created specifically to reflect the zeitgeist. ‘Very Peri,’ Pantone’s violet hue for 2022 is described by the brand as illustrating “the fusion of modern life and how colour trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world and vice versa.”

This shade has the qualities of a blue, but with a violet-red undertone, and may at first seem like a tricky one to incorporate into both a home and wardrobe, but in fact it’s just the pop of colour we need in the dull moments we’ve experienced over the past two years.

For those with a lot of black, brown and darker green in their wardrobes, violet shades are a fun way to add interest. Try a purple clutch, sock or jewellery detail for that subtle pop of colour that shows you’re in the know, without screaming it.

The same goes for interiors and homewares. A purple perspex vase or set of hand blown glass tumblers are both easy ways to experiment without the risk. If you fancy a bit of DIY, try upcycling an old vase by repainting it in a cheerful hue like Resene ‘Kingfisher Daisy’. You’ll be surprised by just how easily it slots into your home’s existing colour palette.
