Some things we bought (and loved) in February

As always at the end of the month, we look back on our bank statements to remember our small, medium and big investment purchases that made us smile.

From hair accessories to mushroom-shaped snacks, this month Zoe out-Twees herself, Tyson breaks two of her cardinal clothing rules, Rebecca buys another hair accessory and Lara gets heavily influenced by her future mother-in-law. Read on to see what made our list...

Twenty-seven Names ‘Atmosphere’ blazer, $620

The double breasted blazer dreams are made of. Photo / Supplied

As items in my wardrobe give up the ghost, I’m trying to replace them with well-made alternatives that are going to last longer. This month that meant I got to upgrade my very well worn black blazer for this gorgeous heavyweight number from twenty-seven names. I love anything double breasted and this oversized silhouette is particularly dreamy. - Tyson Beckett

Dress alteration, $80

This month, in a panic about what to wear to WorldPride in Sydney, I broke two of my cardinal clothing rules. First I bought a dress with a singular event in mind, rather than choosing something that I know I'll wear again and again. Then, I bought it from the internet without trying it on first. Of course, in a karmic slap from Papatūānuku, it arrived and didn't fit over my hips or butt.

Luckily, like the environmental fairy godmother that she is, Jessica from Reformation Studio was able to rework a large tie on the back into two panels that could be added to the sides of the dress to accommodate my rump. If there's clothing in your wardrobe that needs altering, reworking or repairing, take it in to her and watch her work her alchemy. - TB

Francis Ford Coppola Sofia Rosé, $45

Am I a wine expert? No. Have I watched the Godfather? Also no. But I am a big Sofia Coppola girlie who idolises the entire dreamy aesthetic industry that’s been built up around her (I’m processing her problematic parts…).

That includes her father Francis Ford Coppola’s Sofia branded wines with girly pink packaging for suckers like me, including a “salmon pink” Rosé in a beautiful bottle and sparkling wine in a can (you can’t buy the cans here in NZ, or at least that I know of: please tell me if you know where you can!).

I’m not a huge fan of Rosé, but let’s be honest, I bought this solely for the bottle and the Sofia factor. I was pleasantly surprised though as it actually tastes great for a Rosé; dry and not too sweet. - ZWA

Rosé and chocolate snacks, purchased for the cute factor alone. Photos / Supplied

Meiji Kinoko no yama chocolate snack, $8

I could spend hours in Japanese food and home stores, particularly the snack and stationery aisles. Heaven! During a recent visit to Japan Mart in Newmarket, I picked up a few things including these mushroom-shaped chocolate and biscuit snacks. I was like 'omg, so cute,' then someone at work said, 'they look like a penis' and now I can't see anything else. - ZWA

Daylight Moon dress, $448 (on sale)

Cute! Photo / Supplied

I'm a long-time fan of Madeleine Richards, the designer behind local brand Daylight Moon who used to have the label MAW and formerly of the Britomart boutique MADE. She really gets that mix of simplicity and playfulness that I'm drawn to, as well as having a mutual love of collars. I was inspired to buy this dress after seeing the pink version on the musician Beabadoobee in a delightful shoot she did for Cool Pretty Cool - the lilac floral just felt more me. - Zoe Walker Ahwa

Caitlin Snell bow, $95, and Ganni scrunchie, $24

Another month, another hair accessory. Photo / Supplied

At this time of the year I get very few ‘nice things’ as my children’s boring back-to-school needs take priority. But here we are, another month another hair accessory. Actually, make that two hair accessories.

This month, to satisfy my shopping endorphins, I bought a bow from Caitlin Snell and then I bought a Ganni scrunchie from The Outnet after admiring it in the hair of a friend. I’m also obsessed with the red Gloria scrunchie we shot Lorde in and all the incredible Lelet accessories now stocked by Colleen. So watch this space, perhaps I’ll become a professional hair accessory collector. - Rebecca Wadey

Easiyo yoghurt maker, $19

The idea of making my own yoghurt had never appealed to me - I remember going to school with kids who carried tupperwares of homemade yoghurt that always looked a little sad and runny. But a few weeks ago while visiting my boyfriend's parents, I tried his mum's homemade Greek yoghurt, which was so creamy and thick and delicious. She also makes her own labneh with it by hanging the yoghurt over a cloth. I was sold, so I bought an Easiyo from the supermarket for $20 and got a couple of the packets.

Firstly, this saves money! I pay $3.50 for a tub of yoghurt now that I was normally buying for $10. Secondly, it's so satisfying and fun to use - you just add hot water and leave it to thicken. I feel a step closer to being a wholesome Greek housewife, which is all I aspire to be. I'm going to try to make a whipped date labneh out of it this week, inspired by the one from Kisa in Wellington (inspired by Grace Ko's 'best thing I ate' last year). - Lara Daly

Save dollars on yoghurt, spend them on gold. Photos / Supplied.

Helios Signet Ring by Hanka In, $229

Another discovery that came from my boyfriend’s mum (thanks, Pamela!). She gifted me a really cute bag for Christmas from Bello, a store in Wellington I had no idea existed. I visited the store when I was in Wellington recently and this gold ring caught my eye, it sort of looks like a child’s drawing of a signet ring. The jewellery brand Hanka In is by two Parisian sisters who design for “modern, feminine and assertive women.” A lot of their stuff is a bit boho for me, but certain pieces I love.

- Lara Daly
