Everyday trends: Tips, tricks and haircare hacks

As we approach the end of the year, it’s the perfect time to take stock of your daily hair styling routine and give it a little refresh. Whether you’re stuck in a hair rut, or you just want to learn some new tips, having a few go-to styles in your repertoire will make all the difference as we head into party season.

From beachy top knots to sleek ponytails, the five hair how-tos below are simple enough to fit within any routine, and can take you from a chic day look to a fun night out seamlessly.

The key to nailing these looks with confidence at home is knowing your hair type and finding the right products for your needs. To help you, TRESemmé hair expert Kirti Sharma shares her tips to keeping hair healthy and salon-soft, as well as how to give your locks the extra TLC it needs in the summer months.

“In summer, the high UV exposure can pose stress on scalp skin and can dry out the hair from within. Moreover, summer activities like swimming and not rinsing the hair afterwards with fresh water can add to damage and dryness,” explains Sharma.

“To keep the hair in good condition, it is especially important to properly cleanse the scalp, and incorporate moisturising hair products in your routine. If your hair is well hydrated and healthy from within, then you will have natural shine.”

Tailoring your hair care routine to suit your lifestyle is a no-brainer - the first step Sharma recommends is to consider how often you’re washing your hair.

“The frequency of washing hair depends on your hair type and lifestyle. For example, if your hair is very oily then it’s important to use a deep cleansing shampoo such as TRESemmé Cleanse & Replenish. If you’re outdoors a lot and your hair is exposed to heavy pollution, again it is important to wash hair to remove those pollutants and use moisturising hair products afterwards. The vitamin E and jojoba oil in TRESemmé Moisture Rich Conditioner will help to add natural shine to your hair and provide deep hydration.”

Drier hair types prone to frizz should adopt a less frequent washing routine, as over-washing can dry out the hair more. “The best way to avoid frizz and flyaways is to use conditioning products that prevent your hair becoming excessively dry,” says Sharma. “Products designed with sunflower seed oil and vitamin A, like TRESemmé Smooth & Silky Shampoo and Conditioner help to moisturise unruly hair from within leaving it salon soft.”

Without replenishing dry hair with the moisture it needs after UV exposure, chemical treatments or heat styling, “it can keep on increasing in extent and lead to damaged hair. When the hair becomes damaged, you need intense moisturisation - the TRESemmé products with biotin, coconut oil and jojoba oil can help strengthen damaged hair.”

Once you’re in a good routine using professional quality products at home, experimenting with different hair styles like the ones below will have you looking like you just left the salon. We invite you to have fun with these five styles that personify effortless chic. Perfection isn’t the goal so embrace your personal creativity. No matter your hair type, experimenting is half the fun.

How to: The Sleek and Chic Pony

A smooth and silky look suitable for night and day, and everything in between.

1. Smoothness is key for this sleek low pony, so start by prepping your hair by using TRESemmé Smooth & Silky Shampoo and Conditioner, formulated with argan oil to help smooth frizziness.

2. Gently towel-dry hair and part down the centre using a tail comb.

3. Blow-dry your hair to finish drying, and give it a final blast on the cool setting to help close your hair cuticle and seal in shine.

4. To smooth any stubborn flyaways, spritz a small amount of TRESemmé hairspray onto a brush and lightly smooth over the top layer of your hair. Sweep hair back into a low ponytail and secure with a silk scrunchie at the base of the nape.

How to: The Beachy Top Knot

A sexy, tousled look for textured hair, perfect for summer weekends.

1. For this beachy look, thoroughly cleanse and nourish hair with TRESemmé Moisture Rich Shampoo and Conditioner, made with jojoba oil to revive moisture levels (especially if you’ve been spending time in the sun or swimming!)

2. Spritz damp hair with TRESemmé Heat Protect Spray before blow-drying your hair.

3. Section the top half of your hair up and into a loose half-bun.

4. Then, working in small sections, take pieces from the bottom layer and twist hair up and around the base of the bun, securing with bobby pins as you go.

How to: A nineties-inspired half up/half down style.

Smooth, sleek locks for a fun night out inspired by the Hadid sisters and Hailey Bieber.

1. Smoothness is the key to this nineties inspired ‘do. Start by washing hair with TRESemmé Smooth & Silky Shampoo and Conditioner, which is formulated to make hair 2 x smoother.

2. Part hair horizontally from ear-to-ear. Pull the lower half of your hair into a pony to keep it in place while you smooth down the top half using a bristle brush and your hairdryer. Then repeat with the lower section.

3. Once all is smooth, fasten the top half of your hair into a sleek pony. A pony that sits high on the crown of your head will give a more fashion-forward look, or wear it lower down for less of a statement. Pull tendrils out around your face and twist as/if required.

4. Then free the lower hair from its pony, give it a final brush and spritz your whole head with TRESemmé hairspray.

How to: The Shaggy Bob

A low maintenance do’ that celebrates natural wave.

1. Lightness and bounce is key to this curly bob, so start by deeply cleansing your hair with TRESemmé Cleanse & Replenish Shampoo and Conditioner which will hydrate and soften hair without weighing it down.

2. Gently towel-dry your hair to squeeze out excess moisture - avoid rubbing to prevent frizziness and maintain your hair’s natural curl pattern.

3. Finish drying off your hair with a diffuser or a hair dryer on a low heat setting, gently encouraging curls by twisting small sections around your finger.

4. Finally, use a thin curling tong to shape and define curls, wrapping small sections around the tong to frame your face. Voila!

How to: An Easy Loose Braid

Easy to personalise for most hair types, from thick and textured through to smooth and silky. Also suitable for those ‘in between washing’ days!

1. Texture is everything for this loose, lived-in boho braid, perfect for your summer beach hair. Start with TRESemmé Moisture Rich Shampoo and Conditioner, formulated with biotin to help protect hair against breakage. Then apply TRESemmé TRES TWO Extra Hold Mousse, from root to tip, working throughout using your fingers.

2. Take sections of hair into your hands and scrunch them, working from the ends until your fingers hit your scalp. Blow dry each section using hot air to lock in the style, then cold air to seal it.

3. Pull hair back loosely,  allowing pieces to fall naturally framing the face. Create a loose braid, leaving these front pieces out. Secure the braid with bobby pins, leaving out 1-3 inches at the end for that laid-back, perfectly imperfect look.

Everyday trends: Tips, tricks and haircare hacks

Content created in partnership with TRESemmé
